Sir Seersucker & Princess Pink ~ ENGAGED!

Sir Seersucker & Princess Pink ~ ENGAGED!

Precisely one week ago my younger sister and her long-time beau became officially engaged!  They have entrusted their collective North Carolina lady-folk with the larger plans and phone calls.  And I am happy to report that one week into the engagement:

Church & Favored Mininster – CHECK

Reception Venue – CHECK

Florist – CHECK

Band – returning my return phone call tomorrow (we’re playing phone tag)

Photographer – awaiting return phone call & may go stalk their studio sometime this week

Cake – appointment in June to discuss design

I have already pre-ordered my 2013 Lilly Pulitzer agenda, which should get here in mid-July so I can begin detailing the to-do’s and appointments we can expect over the next 12 months.  If you can’t tell, I’m a wee bit excited!  Elizabeth is the baby of our family, and her fiance (ooh – I like using that word), Calen, is an only child, so both families are just head over heels about the news!  And  we just adore Calen.  He’s been a regular part of the family for many years now and he has been “Uncle” Calen to our kids and nephews since the moment each was born.

Can’t wait to post more as things progress (with my sister’s permission, of course).  Have a happy week, y’all!

May Day!

May Day!

I posted about this two years ago, but to summarize May Day is a tradition with the women in my family.  You run outside at first light (or before) and locate the perfect patch of grass before kneeling down and giving the grass a raspberry…technically speaking and the sound effects are optional.  This is an imperative part of our beauty regimen and supposedly keeps you looking gorgeous for the next 12 months.  I took pictures this morning during my jaunt to the back yard at about 6:40 a.m for your viewing pleasure (and perhaps a visual aid for you when you start this odd ritual next May first).  And here is the link to my original post:  http://artbydot.com/?p=38

The side area of our backyard

Me at 6:40 a.m.

Step 1: Remove your glasses

Step 2: Test the waters

Step 3: Kneel down and get a good look at your dewy selection

Step 4: Stick your face in the grass.  No, really.  Do it.

Emerge looking like this:

You’re welcome!

Peter Paul Rubens

I wanted to be “Rubenesque”

Diana and her Nymphs Surprised by the Fauns (detail)  1638-40

I have taken this definition of Rubenesque from urbandictionary.com ~

A woman that has a similar body shape to the style of women painted by Rubens. Not just any slightly overweight woman. Not just any girl who has round hips or a bum. The women in Rubens paintings were often very plump, with large round hips. While it was once a compliment, now it often a criticism or back handed compliment.
Here is the link to the artist’s bio on wikipedia:  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peter_Paul_Rubens
And here is the link to what I think is the official website for Mr. Rubens:  http://www.peterpaulrubens.org/
Roughly 12-13 years ago (2000-2002) in one of my first college art history classes we touched briefly on a man named Peter Paul Rubens.  Though his was one slide of the hundreds (thousands?) I saw in my college career, it was one that stuck with me beyond the classroom.  Partly because of the beauty of his paintings and his lovely use of color and partly because of the subject matter.  I know the nude human form has always been a popular choice, but his nude women were simply breathtaking to me.  Their soft, curvy bodies reminded me of my own and I think that may be why I loved them so much.  At the time he was painting, the women he portrayed were the ideal.  Rubens’ women might have been an image of what women wanted to be like and what men wanted to be with – if that is at all true, then for the most part times have changed, huh?  I immediately added myself to Rubens’ voluptuous category and consciously took on on that adjective when referring to myself.  This was in college, well before I was truly obese and at that time I fit the description “to a T”.
The Three Graces 1620-23
It was also at this point that I was involved in a relationship with a man who adored my curves.  He took every chance to tell me so and because he was 10 years older than me I thought that he was um…well-versed in regards to women.  It must be ok to be soft and curvy if this (pretty damn good looking older man) thought I was the bees knees.  So in retrospect, maybe these were contributing factors as to why I never attempted any significant weight loss as a young adult.
Cimon and Iphigenaia
I have never dated anyone who was dissatisfied with the way I looked or the way my body was and the awesome guy I married is no different!  He has always cherished me and treated me like his little princess.  Until I became his um…big princess.  I wonder if my security with myself led me to get heavier than I should.  Was it a true sense of satisfaction with myself or was it an unconscious pretense because I was scared to acknowledge what I was doing to myself and too darn lazy to do anything about it?  I’m not sure.  I feel like it was perhaps both.
Venus and Adonis
I was the most shy, wall-flower-ish, introverted girl you could imagine before I attended an all-female high school and a women’s college.  I opened up and found myself, my voice, my whimsical/outspoken/sly personality, my creative desires (being an art major kinda blows the top off of being a square…at one point, my dad jokingly asked my beloved professor and adviser if he could “put me back in my box…just a little bit”), and am still the girl who I became late in high school.
And fast forward to 2010/2011 I really was just full of idiotic excuses…I’m tired, I can’t fit it in to my schedule, I watch the kids all day, I don’t like sweating…what BS.  I can’t fit my own health into my schedule?!  Now, I believe that we have to take care of ourselves to the best of our abilities to help us better care for those around us.  Exercise, eating better, sleeping enough, being intimate with your partner, taking a bubble bath during naptime or running off to the book store to read and drink coffee while the kids are at school – whatever you need to do for yourself be it big or small, for heaven’s sake – DO IT!  You are worth it.  Your family and friends are worth it.
Side note:  Remind me sometime to do a post about some of my weird senior year projects…video taping a sand castle being washed away, using my body as the brush and rolling around naked on a 5′x9′ canvas (in my private senior studio) and showing my class my process by strutting across campus in nothing but paint and bubble wrap – I still have the canvas and the pictures.  A trusted girlfriend who happened to work at a photography studio took and developed the pictures for me…YES, pre-digital cameras, and NO I’m not that friggin’ old!  So, there’s something you didn’t know about me ~ I’ve had nude pictures taken!  HA!  I’m such a tramp.
I am still getting used to the changes in my body since I began losing my excess weight in June 2011.  I’m not quite done yet, my goal is 14 pounds away, but I don’t want to be wafer thin and flat chested.  Maybe I did in middle school and junior high when all the girls were buying clothes from the J. Crew catalog, and I was trying to hide myself under boys’ baggy jeans and oversize shirts.  But I am seeing the final product start to take shape and am happy to say that I think I’ll still have a touch of the Rubenesque figure I have so admired.  However, I am aware now that I was not a healthy person at this same point last year and I cannot and will not ever head back down that road again.  Being Rubenesque is one thing, being obese is entirely another and I need to keep that in mind as I strive to maintain my new eating habits and lifestyle choices.  I guess in my head I’m thinking about moderation…all things in moderation: food, sweets and curves…any of your vices.
I’m not sure how to wrap this one up…this one was more about just sharing something about me.  And I’ll definitely start pondering ideas for a college art project post.  Have a wonderful weekend, y’all!  If nothing, hopefully I introduced a new artist to you for your consideration.

Easter Bunny, A Purple Finger and Hot Pink Pants!

Easter Bunny, A Purple Finger and Hot Pink Pants!

Wowza, it feels like forever since my last post.  Apologies to all!  I’m back!  This one will be a quick summary of the last few weeks around here.

To start with, I took the little ones to visit my sister and her handsome beau over Easter weekend.  It was the tots’ spring break week to begin with so a long weekend was a perfect fit.  We left daddy at home this time for a little bit of rest, which he turned into a major “honey do” weekend instead (no complaints here!)  My boys were exceptional travelers and considering their ages and all of the changing variables with taking them out of town, we had a mighty fine weekend!  We romped around a favorite playground, tried several new restaurants  (Fox Brothers Barbeque & Osteria del Figo – I HIGHLY recommend both!), descended upon the aquarium and the zoo (not mama’s smartest idea considering it was spring break and Easter weekend), dyed eggs and had a visit from the Easter bunny.  Mr. Bunny even left eggs all over the apartment for the tots to find when they woke up!

Our hosts were super prepared and so hands-on with the kids, as they always are.  It was almost like a mini-vacation for mama with all the extra help with meals, baths, play and bedtimes.  A slice of heaven if I may say so.  Evan’s little air mattress was set up by Auntie’s side of the bed and she made him quite the cozy little nest.  I toted along the good ‘ol pack & play for Zeb (who barely still fits in it!) and set him up in their office.  And I had the living room and sofa bed all to myself.  With a consistent routine for the kids and team work when getting everyone showered, dressed and ready to go we had many adventures and the weather cooperated mostly.  Our one grey, cold-ish day was spent indoors at the CNN Center and the aquarium.  Both boys LOVED all the fish.  The moving tunnel was enthralling and the giant tank wall had our attention for an extended amount of time.  We got through the sections we could, maneuvered as best we could amidst the massive crowds and just enjoyed ourselves.  The zoo was just as busy, but there was more elbow room so it didn’t feel as cramped.  Seeing the kids’ faces at these different places was truly all the happiness I could want as a mother.  We had the obligatory “special treats” associated with the act of vacationing…a special outing with Auntie to “Sublime Doughnuts” to pick out some of the most frou-frou/gourmet doughnuts I’ve seen, and a post-zoo cool down at Yoforia.  Our bedtimes were a little later than usual, but with Auntie and Uncle on hand, their services were greatly preferred over mama’s and bedtime ran smoothly.

I was able to relax and enjoy my hosts’ company after the tots were asleep.  We enjoyed hot tea and some mindless tv while we just yapped and caught up on everything with each other.  With the stunning skyline view, and the great joy of being comfortable with my temporary caretakers I could not have asked for a better way to end the days.

My purple finger came about this past weekend.  My husband and I have been trying to make up for the multi-year lapse in meticulously caring for our yard.  Mainly regarding weeding and patio care.  We spent this past Sunday outside as it was gloriously sunny and the temperatures were PERFECT.  The boys played in and around their freshly cleaned out playhouse while daddy mowed the lawn and mama went to work on some major weeds.  All was happy in our little yard until almost lunchtime.  I had halted weed pulling to go start digging up our granite patio around back, as we are re-doing this area soon and wanted to do the demo ourselves to save some moola.  I had on my leather gloves, was rocking the shovel and was slowly digging up one (enormous and heavy) granite brick at a time, loading it onto the cart and toting a full cart to the back corner of the yard to stack and keep until we can decide whether to re-purpose them or donate them.  Well, I was loading a brick in the cart and managed to completely crush my left ring finger in between two.  It nearly took my breath away and I thought I might pass out…initially likening the pain to the pain of giving birth but IN MY FINGEROh sweet baby Jesus, did it hurt! I cried like a little girl, Matt babied me and helped me ice my already swollen and purple finger and I pulled it together.  I didn’t think it was broken, but I was pretty darn sure the nail wasn’t going to make it.  Never having lost a nail before in this manner, I am totally skeeved out and am picturing scenes from “The Fly” in my mind, which isn’t helping anything.  A trip to the doctor’s office on Monday confirmed that there was no broken bone, but I did a bang-up job (pun intended) on my poor finger, and was told that there is no fix for this, I just have to wait for the nail to fall off (seriously gross, right?) and then and only then will the pressure in my bulbous fingertip be relieved.  I am so not looking forward to this.

And yeah, since I described it, I had to give you a visual reference, too.  It’s no good.  This particular activity – I do not recommend.

On a super amazing note, I ran by the mall the other day before I picked up the kids from preschool and scored some Neon Pink skinny-ish jeans from Gap!  I never go in Gap, I’ve never been able to fit in their clothing.  But a window display drew me in ~ me to the color pink is like a moth to a bug zapper, but without the electrocution and dying part… ~ and I tried on a pair.  Well, folks – the size 12 I picked up was too big.

My inner monologue was something like this:  Um, huh? Yeah, I double checked the size and noted my confused gaze in the mirror. Um…I’m in Gap, and these 12’s are too big.  Is this right?  Did they mislabel this pair?  Oh my god.  What do I do?  Hi, yes – I’m doing great, but would you grab these in a 10, pretty please?  Did I just say that to the sales associate?  Awesome.  Am I dreaming?

And here is the awesome pink find – the neon color isn’t showing up properly, but they are HOT and I CANNOT wait to wear them!  After I find out from my sister what one wears with neon pants…

Happy Spring!

Happy Spring!

As I mentioned in a previous post, winters in NC vary greatly and the winter season of 2011-2012 was um….non-existent.  I have hung our heavy coats in the back of our closets, packed away the boys’ scarves, hats and and fleecy warm stuff.  And my precious sister and her beau, the boys’ beloved Auntie & Uncle Calen, came home for spring break and were kind enough to take on the annual spring/Easter bunny photo shoot.  My sis is our fabulous photographer and Calen was a gem, as always, and volunteered to don the suit.  He’s done this before for us, so he’s a pro!  Here are a few of my FAVES ~ enjoy!  And since it is officially springtime, I bid you blooming good wishes for fresh breezes and baskets of colorful blossoms in your yard.

This is Evan’s giant “cheeeeeeese” smile.

Sorry about the runny nose in this one – mama didn’t see it until after the “shoot” was done.

I promise I didn’t let Zeb scream for too long!

Fluffy to Fabulous Update

Fluffy to Fabulous Update

***WARNING:*** This post has before & current photos that are swimwear related.  Sit down, take a deep breath, and read on if you care to.  If you have no desire to see me in a bathing suit “before” or “after”, skip the rest of this post and carry on with your day!

It’s bathing suit time, so I am taking the plunge (pun intended) and doing a bathing suit edition of my weight loss update.  As of this week’s weigh-in I am at 168.4 pounds, which is now equal to 78.4 pounds LOST!  Whooooooooooooooooooo!  I am so excited about this, I cannot even properly translate my elation into words.

The first two are from July 2011, approximately one month after I started my Jenny Craig journey (pardon the “bathroom mirror self-portrait”):

My weight here is around 230 pounds (I can look it up and be specific in a bit).

Here I am today – seriously, just 15 minutes ago in my living room.  I am at 168.4.  This is me ~ lumps, bumps, thighs and all.  No retouching of any kind (truthfully, I don’t even know how to do that!)  And though I’m not perfect, and never ever will be, I am becoming the best version of myself that I can.  And that is something I am very happy about and proud of.

These are add-ons that I took May 22, 2012 before I took last year’s bathing suit to the consignment shop.  I’m at 162 now!

Mama’s Musings…

Mama’s Musings…

I think I have figured out the answer to one of the mysteries of the universe…

“Sleeping in” isn’t really an option anymore with kids in the house.  Sleeping in for me now is 7am vs. 6:15-6:30 if I want to shower & blow dry before our day begins.  Pre-kiddos a typical weekend involved late nights with friends or movies with the hubby and a leisurely rousing sometime before lunch.  Ahhh, yes, the old days.  So it has taken me over three years to figure out how to reverse sleep in.  It kind of puts a dent in the few coveted evening hours with your hunny, but every once in a while if you go to bed very shortly after you put the kids to bed you get to sneak in a few extra hours of sleep.  My light bulb turned on when I had this epiphany, and I feel like a mega-genius.  So – go forth into the world…and once in a while, tuck yourself into bed at 8:30.

24 Hours of Winter

24 Hours of Winter

Well, folks, here in the Carolina of the North we have fairly unpredictable weather in the winter.  We usually skip springtime and run head first into summer, and then summer temps last until um…November.  It’s a bit odd, but we’re used to it.  Unlike our comrades in Colorado who place snow bets re: their first day of snow (usually in September or October), around here we place bets of whether we will actually get ANY snow.  Ever.  Last year surprised us and we had a significant amount of snow days in December, which was out of the norm for us, and I even experienced the first “white Christmas” of my lifetime, the last one being sometime in the mid 1970’s.

Sunday February 19 we had our first snow of this 2011-2012 winter season.  During the boys’ naps it began with a sleet-y/rain-y mix for a couple hours, then slowly changed into the soft fluffy stuff that I’ve been waiting for.  It was truly perfect timing since kids were out of school Monday anyway for President’s Day.  It snowed on and off into the night and we awoke to a gloriously sunny Monday.  I fed the boys, layered on all of our cold weather gear and headed out into the arctic.  Ha.  It was already melting away by the time we got outside at 8:30 a.m.  It was warm enough in the sunshine to feel a bit…hot? in all my layers so I knew at least the boys would be warm enough.

We tromped through the back yard, then up onto the deck, then back around to the front to say hey to some neighbors’ kiddos.  These sweet kids asked Evan to sled with them, which he happily did (over and over), and upon the arrival of a few more kids from around the corner the activity switched gears to building a snowman with the perfect composition of our rapidly depleting snow supply.

After we finished the snowman, we retreated back into the house to toss our gear in the dryer, take baths and have lunch before naptime.  And after naps, like a precisely timed operation, the snow was melted and gone…all except our group-effort snowman, which we can see from our front porch and from the playroom window.  We keep checking on him.  He keeps getting shorter.  But he is still there.

So, we had 24 hours of winter.  Bring on springtime!  Mama is ready to bust out all her cute new sun dresses!

Hmmm…

This is not me.  That would be awesome, though, huh?  She is quite a fox, and I love her suit!

Spring is (hopefully) on the way, I’m still moving right along on my weight loss journey and after my exhilarating shopping experience last weekend with my sister (see previous post), I am getting bolder.  I am thinking about doing a bathing suit post whenever I get the new suit I have picked out.  I tried it on last weekend to determine the size I would need, but did not purchase it because the store didn’t have the color I was looking for.  So, I am going to wait a few more months (it’s only February) and when I order and receive my spandex leotard, I may just grow some temporary cahones and have the hubbs take a few pictures for me.  I was truly excited by the woman staring back at me in the mirror in the gigantic Macy’s at Lennox Square.  I’m not sure I’ve been this tickled by my appearance in a bathing suit since one of my high school spring breaks when my mom bought me some new bathing suits before a spring break trip to somewhere in Florida…So.  That’s it.  I’m thinking about it for another weight loss progress post.  Time shall tell if I’ll actually do it.

Atlanta Extravaganza!

Atlanta Extravaganza!

I’ve been counting down the weeks (for several months now) to my solo weekend in Atlanta with my little sister, Elizabeth & her live-in love, Calen.  This past weekend was it!  My mother kindly met me at our house for lunch Friday and helped me feed the little ones before taking on their afternoon care while I hopped in the mama-mobile and hit the highway heading south.  I was absolutely going to miss all my handsome men, but I was so excited for some much anticipated sister time, a fantastic exhibit at the High Museum and the obligatory shopping and dining that come with the novelty of being childless and husbandless in Atlanta for roughly 43 hours.  Also – with having lost so much weight over the last 8 months I am in true need of some clothes that fit!

My adventure began with simply being in the car alone.  I went through the CD’s in the changer (everything from Mumford & Sons to Edwin McCain and Beyonce) and then turned to my favorite XM stations and proceeded to sing loudly (and badly) for the five hours the drive took me.  It was delightful, amusing and uplifting in a way.  Upon arrival, my kind hosts helped me lug my bags upstairs and we almost immediately headed back out for some shopping.  I scored several deals on the clearance racks in Anthropologie, played with makeup in Sephora and enjoyed a late, but sinful dinner at Ruth’s Chris Steakhouse.  It was the first visit for all three of us, and I think I can say we all gave it two thumbs up!

Saturday morning began leisurely with some coffee and showers before our cultural outing to the High Museum.  The feature exhibit right now is “Picasso to Warhol: Fourteen Modern Masters”.  We were all a bit surprised to see the encouragement of smart phone use for A) picture taking and B) for downloading an app that serves as a guide supplement.  Embracing technology is a smart move for the museum, in my opinion.  Get the word out, draw more visitors, share the art…that’s the point, right?  Once I get my pictures uploaded I’ll get a few on here.  After studying art history so intensely in college, and being a life-long artist and art lover it was simply divine to see this collection in person.

After a lunch stop at Mellow Mushroom, we continued on our retail mission…er, MY retail mission.  A quick trip to the Goodwill nearby landed me four tops, and a trip to Nordstrom Rack happily had me trying to sift through EVERYTHING that fit just to pick my very favorite items for additions to my wardrobe.  Many sweet and/or sexy dresses and pretty tops ended up in my bags.  Whoooo!  A refreshment stop at Starbucks revived us before a drive out to another retail center – Calen has mentioned a Restoration Hardware store (a STORE!  I had only seen the catalogs), which was situated next to a Container Store (oh boy!) and all this was located around the perimeter of another huge-mongous mall.  Soma’s sale racks beckoned me, then Urban Outfitters, then Macy’s…and then…I think I wore Calen out.  We deposited him and our bags back at home and made our way to a Hibachi steakhouse for another decadent dinner.  The girly dinner was thoroughly enjoyable, though we were definitely there on Valentine’s “date night” night…it kept us giggling all evening (when we weren’t stuffing our faces).  After our late night meal, we went home again and got pajamafied in preparation for a mug of hot tea ~ courtesy of Calen ~ and some major pore-cleaning in the form of a peel-off face mask and a couple hours of Nick at Night.

My visit at an end, Elizabeth and I called in our breakfast order to the Flying Biscuit and went to pick it up, so we could let Calen sleep in a little bit.  It was another spectacularly sunny (freezing cold) day, and we took our breakfast all curled up on the sofa bed together.  They both helped me get the car loaded again and saw me off right around noon.  And I enjoyed another five hours of loud, non-Disney related audio material on my way back to my guys.  I arrived home before they did (they had been at a birthday party) and had time to start laundry and unpack before welcoming them with happy embraces.

I am already looking forward to my next visit in April with the kids.  We are hoping for fair weather so we can partake in as many outdoor activities as possible.  Happy Valentine’s Day y’all!  I hope everyone’s week is off to a good start.
