Halloweenish Happenings

Halloween-ish Happenings

Happy Halloween y’all!

We are in the midst of  my favorite time of year and at the start of the awesomest string of holidays EVER.  I love Halloween, and I love Christmas – but in completely different ways.  Christmas makes me feel sweeter and gooey-er than a giant marshmallow in a bonfire ~ I love the lights, the glitter, the smell of the live tree in our living room, the food, the festive gatherings with friends and family, the music, the chilly air…all of it.  I LOVE Christmas.

Halloween excites me, though.  I love the costumery, the unleashing of your inner crazy, the indulgence of the candies and total strangers handing them out just because it’s what you’re supposed to do (for some reason or other), the repetition of The Rocky Horror Picture Show on at least one channel…I love dressing up – being sexy or scary or gruesome or silly – whatever strikes your fancy.

We, as a neighborhood, do a pre-trick-or-treating potluck dinner, then my husband takes the little ones around our cul-de-sac followed by both grandparent’s houses (they both live in town), while I have candy/door duty.  I enjoy seeing all the kids and their outfit choices, and because I usually overbuy in the candy department I beg them to take generous handfuls (the bug-eyed disbelief is amusing, too).  I had a few interesting responses tonight just past the 8:00 mark when I asked them to take as much as they wanted.  One young man said “I think I’ve met my quota for the night” – Whaaaaat???  Honey, I’m trying to GIVE you MORE candy and you’ve already met your quota?!  Another young lady said, “No thanks, one is enough, I’ve already got a full bag.”  Oy, kiddos!  TAKE my candy, please!!!

It was a fun weekend, we attended several parties and took the kids to visit people.  I got my “quota” of adorable future blackmail pictures of my precious big boy as a peacock, and my 2 month old as a giraffe =)  I’m a happy lady.  Sad to pack away the Halloween decorations this coming week, but definitely looking forward to busting out my enormous Christmas decor collection!

Mexican Two Bean Chicken Chili Recipe

Mexican Two Bean Chicken Chili = CHILI HEAVEN

I helped a girlfriend make this at her house last Friday night and it was deeee-licious!!!  It was super easy to make, tasted awesome, and it seems like it would be fairly easy to take out things you don’t like, add others, and adjust the spiciness level to suit your tastes.  I had to steal her recipe and share it with you!!!  It makes a lot, freezes well and is hearty enough that my hubbs wolfed his down and was satisfied.  Hey – works for me!

Ingredients:

2 cups chicken broth

1 jar (16 oz) thick and chunky mild salsa

1 cup tomato sauce

1 medium zucchini coarsely chopped (about 1  1/4 cups)

1  1/2 cups black beans

1  1/2 cups pinto beans

1 cup whole kernel corn, drained

3 cups shredded cooked chicken

1 clove garlic, presed

1  1/2 – 2 tbsp chili powder

1 tsp ground cumin

Optional toppings such as shredded cheese, sour cream, crushed tortilla chips, sliced green onions or fresh cilantro leaves

Directions:

Balance?

Balance???

So, here I sit, officially a mommy of two under two.  Well…for another couple weeks anyway ~ Evan’s second birthday is quickly approaching!

But I’ve been thinking about balancing life with these two boys in our lives.  People are asking “how are you, are you sleeping, how’s Evan doing with the new baby, are you finding balance in the new routine?”  Well, I can answer: “fine, kinda, great and Hell No!”  I think balance isn’t the right word perhaps.  We have a little schedule, things I try to incorporate into the days for Evan and Zeb.  Certain regularities they can count on, but everything in between is different ~a bit chaotic, but I’m making it work for me and for us as a family unit.  I think that’s what mom’s do – we make it work.

My already limited “me time” is just about gone.  I try to finish a long email to my best friend since grade school who has moved far away and the computer freezes on me before I can hit send.  Bastard computer.  I’m ready to put kiddos in the car to meet the hubby for dinner and big little man poops in his diaper as we are walking out the door.  I go to the store for bread so we can make sandwiches for lunch and walk out with 2 bags full of stuff, but don’t realize I forgot the darn bread till we get home and end up running to McD’s to get the child some chicken nuggets and apple slices since mommy is an idiot.  I am too exhausted to get up at 6 to shower before both boys wake up, so I spend 30 minutes of the precious, quiet afternoon naptime showering when I wish I were snoozing, too, but I’d rather give up my nap to shower & dry my hair and not smell like feet for the rest of the day.  My husband and I will get takeout food for us because I don’t feel like cooking (Thai, Chinese, Taco Bell….) but we’ll still fix Evan something good and sit at the kitchen table to eat dinner together.  No.  It’s not balanced.  Life as a mommy is completely lopsided.  But you do what you gotta do and make it work.

I feel bad for letting Evan watch cartoons while I nurse, but it keeps him calm and happy for 20 minutes and that’s what I need, so it it so bad?  I leave an Elmo movie on in the bedroom while I clean the kitchen or fold laundry so he can run back and forth…I promise him bubble baths or a trip to the grocery store to see the lobsters if he helps mommy with something…bribery – yes.  Good intentions – yes, also.  At least he’s got preschool a couple days a week and has time to be around friends and activities that are different from what we do together.  I am also so thankful that Zeb is as mellow and chill as he is.  He’s an excellent eater, an absolute pro at nursing and quite efficient so it doesn’t take us that long per feeding.  and he sleeps like a dream (in comparison to his brother at the same age) at night so generally I feel fairly human in the mornings, though I will admit to having become a “coffee person” over the last 6 weeks.  Caffeine in my breast milk?  Yes.  But not that much, so I don’t freak out about it.  Zeb is happy, portable, and Evan adores him (for now!!) and it’s pretty easy to maintain daily daily activities and outings, though my time schedule for prep work is much longer now, but I’m learning & adjusting, and it’s ok!  We’re making it work for us.

I look at my brother and his wife (my best friend since the two of them met), and their twin boys ~ a completely different schedule than us…twin boys who are almost 17 months old and very different than one another.  One sleeps well at night one still does not.  I know it makes them nuts, as well as being very very tired, but they go out and do things when everyone is rested and happy, and their outing times don’t necessarily match up with ours all that frequently, but it works for them!

So to “balance” I say YEAH RIGHT!

I’m just doing what’s right for my family and making it work!

Our new little man is here!

Our new little man in here!!!

As of 5:44 a.m. on Friday, August 13th, 2010, my handsome son has arrived!  He made us wait nearly a week past his due date, but when he decided he was ready – oh boy!  He was ready right then!  Labor was less than three hours from start to delivery and we were only at the hospital for about 45 minutes before he was born…there wasn’t even enough time to get the epidural in properly, so I also (unintentionally) experienced natural childbirth.  Not something I wanted, but not something I regret…also not something I’m sure I want to repeat!  But it’s how it happened and it’s ok!  It was absolutely the most overwhelming pain I’ve ever felt, but because (in the big picture) it didn’t last that long, it was bearable.  Our son, Zebedee Bryan, is here, weighing in at a healthy 8 pounds and measuring at a lanky 22 inches!

Here is a picture of my precious big boy meeting little brother for the first time.  I’ll do another post, I’m sure, to encompass my general hospital experience (which has been great.  But I wanted to make the big announcement while it’s still new!

“Sugarpuff’s” Nursery

“Sugarpuff’s” Nursery

Well….here I am.  unable to nap while my big little man is napping, and 2 days past Sugarpuff’s due date.  Yep.  “Baby Watch 2010″ is still ON!  I’m fine, I really feel great, but I’m getting antsy to meet my little little man.  Until then, here are a few pictures of his nursery.  A new ceiling fan has been installed since these were taken, but otherwise, this is the finished project, and I’m quite tickled with how well everything turned out.

I painted the wall canvases myself using the crib bedding as inspiration.  And the GORGEOUS curtains were a custom design collaboration between myself and my dear & talented friend and interior designer, Amy Christie, out of Chattanooga, TN.

Generally I’m not a huge fan of dark/earthy colors, but the espresso wood finish just lent itself so perfectly to the safari animal theme.  I’m very pleased with the choice.  Plus it allows the vivid colors of the bedding, curtains & walls to really pop, which I wanted, as this room is a smaller space.  I just wanted it to be a bright and happy place for us and for a little boy.

Also, the good thing about the wall canvases, is that whenever kiddo decides he’s not into jungle animals anymore, I can just take the paintings down and we are still left with an awesome room that could pair well with trucks, trains, dinosaurs, monsters, whatever his imagination leads him to!

This is one of my favorite maternity photos that my sister, Elizabeth, so graciously took for me.  She is quite the skilled photographer and has been “booked” (by us) at numerous family affairs – holidays, birthdays, baptisms, etc.  I am proud to be her first paying client with this particular set of photos, but cannot post more right now as quite a few of them contain baby’s name spelled out in blocks.  We are keeping his name to ourselves until he gets here, which we did with our first son as well.  Then we can introduce him to his waiting brother, grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins and friends!  Any day now….any time….tonight…..right now….we’re ready to meet you, honey!  Come on out!

And time suddenly slows down…

And time suddenly slows down…

Prepare for my random, rambling preggo whining.

I’m due this Saturday.  Yes, folks, 4 days from now.  And man I can tell you, I’m done.  I was done last week.  I can’t sleep, I have massive heartburn with everything I do and do not choose to eat, all my bones and joints and things are popping wildly and aching constantly, on top of peeing 17 times a day and running around after a toddler.  I’m done.  If I make it to my doctor’s appointment this Friday, I’m definitely going to ask if they can go ahead and set me up with induction or something next week…my body is tired and the kiddo isn’t even OUT yet…

I was eager to have little man join us last week, as a July baby would add another birthday to a relatively slow birthday month amongst our immediate family – my mother being the only other in this time frame.  In August it picks back up again with not only my husband’s mother’s AND father’s birthdays, but also their anniversary and my own birthday!  Baby has let July slip past him, so I’m not in a real rush anymore, and we’re already on the third day of this month.  I’m just hoping to keep as many days as possible between baby’s birth date and my mother-in-law’s.  Mom-in-law already shares her birthday with – get ready for this – HER mother and one of her sister-in-laws!  No more on that day please!  I’m prepared to duct tape the baby exit closed on that day if necessary.

Let me back up a minute.  When my husband and I merged families, both of our immediate families and ALL of our grandparents had birthdays beginning in mid-May and running through early September.  Literally, it’s almost a weekly/bi-weekly thing for a while…

May 5, nephews

May 8, nephew

May 19, husband

May 22, my brother

June 4, my brother’s wife

June 10, my husband’s sister

June 20, my sister

July 11, my mom

July 16, hubb’s grandmother

~skip nearly a month here~

August 11, my mother-in-law, her mother and a sister-in-law

August 22, my in-laws’s anniversary

August 26, my father-in-law

August 27, me

OY!!!  Seriously!  Not that you can plan these things, but it’s a virtual birthday fest every other week all summer long!  The dinners out are continuous, the birthday shopping is clumped all together…which is fun, but exhausting!  Then, as soon as you wrap up birthday season, you rev up immediately for Thanksgiving and Christmas stuff!!!

And now baby’s birth looms near and I am showing no signs of impending labor at all.  Of course, it could all change in the next hour, but methinks that’s a fat chance.  I’m really just whiny because I’m uncomfortable.  It’s hot here.  It’s humid.  I’m huge.  I am waddling.  Hopping in and out of our giant bed requires sound effects now, as does folding in half to pick up after our little one, hefting laundry, and reaching on tip-toe to put some dishes away.  I’m just tired.  The pregnancy flew by until last week, then something about the magic of 38 weeks halted all of that.  We’ve still got our regular schedule and daily activities/errands/etc.  But all the down time in between is just draaaaaaaaaaging…..Everyone is on “Baby Watch 2010″ and I feel like I’m Lucy in one of my favorite episodes of I Love Lucy when Ricky, Fred & Ethel are all sitting around staring at her like she’s going to explode.

Come forth, little one.  Your daddy, your brother and I would like to meet you.  I’d rather be up with you all night nursing or rocking instead of being up all night because of you peeing every half hour, eating TUMS like candy because of major heartburn.  Come out!  August 4th is looking good on my calendar!

M.A.C. Villains Collection

MAC Villains Collection

Coming in September 2010, the M.A.C. Villains Collection will be here just in time for your fall cosmetic splurge and perhaps a Halloween treat for yourself!

I was delighted when I heard news of this long-awaited collections’ official debut date.  Who better than MAC to compile an amazing makeup color palette to complement and bring to life some of Disney’s greatest animated bad girls, and their newest bad boy.  With the villains chosen ~ Cruella De Vil of “101 Dalmations”, the Evil Queen from “Snow White,” Maleficient from “Sleeping Beauty” (my personal favorite) and Dr. Facilier from “The Princess and the Frog” ~ we are sure to see some fantastic and whimsical products in the line-up.

I’m hoping for some of the deeper hues that accentuate the previously named visages, things that can add to your “special occasion” cosmetic collection…gorgeous colors that you may not use every week, but that will sure make a dramatic and sexy statement when you do.

With 40 items in the collection set to debut on September 30th, I have marked my calendar and am excited to visit my MAC counter and see if there aren’t at least a few things that catch my eye.  This is definitely something for the wild woman in us all…be bold, let your inner naughty girl shine!

Guido, Heartburn and other Fabulous things that happen during pregnancy

Guido, Heartburn and other Fabulous things that happen during pregnancy

Ahh…the home stretch of pregnancy #2 and I can say it has gone much faster than the first – mostly, I believe, due to the toddler I’m chasing around and caring for and not having the pregnancy be the SOLE focus of my life for nearly 10 months.  And I can also say, while I’m glad we are soon to meet our second son, I am sad that I won’t be pregnant much longer.

Yes, I am one of the women who adores being pregnant.  I’ve been very blessed and had near perfect experiences both times which probably contributes to my love of being with child.  I love the “glow”, I love having luscious hair, I love the awesomeness of growing a tiny person inside me and being a vessel of humanity or “incubator of tiny humans” as I like to call it.  I even like the waddle I have adapted near the end of both pregnancies.

There are a few things I do not care for as much, but they come with the territory, and I’m a big girl and can deal with these changes – some temporary, some more lasting.

Guido would be first on my list of not so favorite things about being pregnant.  Guido is my friend. He’s been around for the better part of 6 years now, but lately has been more prominent in my life. Guido is a varicose vein on the back of my left calf. Not terribly attractive, I’m aware of that, but until my first pregnancy he was just “there”.  Hanging out.  He’s never really hurt me physically, never any pain or throbbing, so I haven’t been too concerned about him. But I had him inspected about 4 years ago and was told he could be “taken care of” (this inspired my pet name for him – Guido). I was also told that the chance of developing new varicose veins is higher when pregnant, and if you have existing ones they could get worse. Well, several years ago with pregnancy on my mind for the future, I decided not to bother with Guido until a bit later down the road – that I’d wait until I was done having kiddos and could enjoy the benefits of vein removal. Well, after two pregnancies, Guido is now full on FUGLY.  Longer, darker, ropier,  and he’s conquered virgin leg territory – wrapping from my calf around to the front side and creeping his way up the back of my thigh.  Yes, lovely I know… Definitely sucks, and I’ve even banned skirts, short dresses and capri pants this summer because of Guido. I can’t see him, so I don’t think of him often, and he still doesn’t hurt at all. But man…Guido is one ugly SOB. I’m so freaking pale he is particularly noticeable on the back of my white leg. Ultimately, Guido knows he and I will have to part ways. He doesn’t belong here…not until I’m 92 at least…so we will meet again. For now, I’m trying to ignore him and enjoy the hot, humid summer in my cute maternity clothes. I know he’s watching me, keeping tabs on my whereabouts. But he knows his days are numbered…he’s throbbing a bit now, not painful, but noticeable, and Matt is urging me to have him looked at again this fall after we settle in with baby.  At least if I have to go through several months of compression hose (due to insurance requirements) I’ll be wearing jeans all winter anyway.

Heartburn is number 2 on my list.  EVERYTHING sets it off, particularly in late afternoon and at bedtime.  I try not to overeat – hell, I can’t really overeat, there isn’t enough room in my tummy right now!  But milk…popcorn…chicken…pasta…cereal…EVERYTHING is sending that fire up my throat.  And I’m popping Tums like candy.  Ok, not really, I’m trying to watch the calcium intake with those things, but it feels like it.  I have a bottle in the bathroom, one in the car, one in my purse and one in the kitchen…just an arm’s length away if needed.

And surprisingly the sleeping isn’t as rough yet as I expected.  I still wake up to pee at night at least once, but napping mid-day with Evan and going to bed at a “normal hour” are helping.  I can make it through the day (while chasing a toddler) without being completely wiped.  I’m in a nest of pillows, of course, taking over much more than my fair share of our king size slice of heaven, and I have ear plugs in to block the major chords of my husband’s snoring (yet my mom powers still wake me if there is even a sniffle audible on the baby monitor – cool, but weird how that works), and I have out ceiling fan on high speed with all the covers kicked off my side while my poor Matt has all the covers and a blanket pulled up to his chin to try and cocoon his core in warmth so he doesn’t expire from extreme hypothermia overnight.

And as a bonus, so far I haven’t developed any NEW stretch marks.  I’m just reusing the old ones, which is fine with me!  Yay for me…being green and “recycling” (hey – gimme a break, I’m pregnant and was trying to be witty).

Otherwise – all is good.  I’m only +3 pounds overall (I lost 22 initially, and gained those back slowly over the first 7 months), my blood pressure has been excellent, I’m good to go with no gestational diabetes or Strep B to worry about, I have a good appetite, kiddo seems to be happy and healthy and we are all waiting with held breaths for his ultimate decision to check out the big, beautiful world.

Hopefully we’ll have some good news to post on here soon.  I told Sugarpuff (baby’s nickname until he gets here) that any time from July 26-August 7 is good with me.  He can be on time or a smidge early, but I’d prefer him not to take after his brother and make me wait an extra week.  That was not cool.

Signing off for now.

~

In the beginning…

journal pageHmm…so this is my first official bloggity. I have kept diaries/journals for years…since 1992 to be precise. And I have enjoyed occasionally detailing random adventures or strange thoughts or fabulous shoes/jewelry/make-up I come across on Facebook. But now here I am. Hello World!

This one will be quick as my 18-month old son is about to fall asleep in his high chair, which means it’s mommy’s naptime, too *Whooooo!!* I’m 22 weeks pregnant with another precious boy and these mid-day naps keep me going till bedtime.

So, my goal with this is to document the life and “goings on” of a happy, whimsical, artsy person. To share stories, speculations, musings, travel, artwork (if I ever have time to paint again!) Enjoy and I’ll see you next time!
